  17. The portable operating system interface (POSIX) standard was developed
  18. by the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE) to
  19. ensure portability of applications across different platforms. POSIX
  20. certification encompasses both the specific hardware and the operating
  21. system. For Windows NT version 3.1, Microsoft is obtaining National
  22. Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) certification on a
  23. "vanilla" Intel machine. Original equipment manufacturers (OEMs) that
  24. have bids pending for POSIX certification with Windows NT will then
  25. proceed with the certification of NT on their hardware.

  27. Government Request for Proposals (RFPs) require both the operating
  28. system and the specific hardware to be certified. Companies submit an
  29. RFP to a systems integrator or vendor to propose a solution based on
  30. their software. The issues addressed in such a request include what
  31. the operating system can do, the topology, and which features and
  32. functions are supported.

  37. There are at least three POSIX conformance test suites for POSIX.1:
  38.  
  39.  - NIST Portable Conformance Test Suite (PCTS). 
  40.  
  41.    This suite is made up of approximately 2000 assertions (that is,
  42.    testable statements). To be NIST certified, the vendor must not 
  43.    only pass these tests, but must also submit a Portable Conformance 
  44.    Document (PCD) that explains how each feature or function was 
  45.    implemented. Testing is done by an NIST-approved testing company.

  47.  - Verification Suite for X/Open (VSX).

  49.    This suite is part of X/Open's base X/Open Portability Guide (XPG)
  50.    branding. When the product passes the base operating system tests, 
  51.    which include POSIX.1, utilities (POSIX.2 level), C libraries, and 
  52.    internationalization, each box has the right to display a sticker 
  53.    that indicates that it has been approved to receive the X/Open brand 
  54.    (for example, SCO's ODT product).

  57.    to a particular hardware platform.
